Excellent real southern Italian food. Best real Italian food I've had since I've lived in Pittsburgh. All orders were individually prepared and were in large proportions. The owner/chef and his wife (the desert chef) are from Scicly. The chef will come out and talk about his preparations and is fun to talk to. The waitress was even better - an Albanian who is attending a police academy who was very lively and provided great service. All in all, a most enjoyable experience for my wife and I who spent a few days in Lauderdale.

This is a real gem in an area we call "food forsaken." Family- run business where the whole team's related. Pasta portions are quite large - penne bolognese and with eggplant very good. Homemade ravioli was a revelation. The parking is out back and driveway is before the building as you drive north on US 1. We will be back.

Wow. What a find. Just go. Excellent food beautifully served. Fresh everything and it's reflected in the quality. Friendly staff that welcomes you just like you entered their home. Homemade pastas and sauces that can't be beat. I had the best cannoli I've had. They beat anything I had in the NJ/NY area. This family friendly place is the best. Go, eat, enjoy!!

Well, much as I hate to be a spoiler, I would Like to advise diners that the glowing reviews need to be tempered with a few realities. First and foremost, the menu at this Italian spot is just that! Italian, with a heavy focus on pastas. Further, if you dine after 7:00, the fish entrees may be unavailable, the outstanding lemon tart may be finished! We chose this restaurant based on the reviews re Sicilian Specialities, but did not find much on the menu that was any different from most Italian cafes. We did enjoy our pasta and meatballs and sausage. The cannelloni was lovely and lighter than most pastas. Just be prepared to carbo load!

A great place. Authentic ltalian food, expertly prepared, large portions at a reasonable price. Which is reason enough to go. But the topper is the personalized welcome as if you are the special guest of the family that owns and runs the restaurant. I read the reviews that said this, but then my wife and I experienced it. It is true and it makes for a fantastic evening. For example one of the members of the family personally walked us thru the menu and made some excellent suggestions. We are headed back there during our next visit.

I truly enjoyed my meal. I'm Italian, and I have to say theirs is one of the best tomato sauces I have ever had. No red lead here! When we complimented our meal, the chef visited our table and shared his recipe with us. I now have a tomato mill on the way, but I suspect I will have to visit Mediterraneo at Pompano Beach again and again, until I get it right. This could take years! Other items on the menu were equally well-prepared and delicious, and the service was superb. Because Mediterraneo is family owned and operated, every diner is offered a warm welcome and a gracious good-bye. I look forward to my next visit!

This place is mom and pop at its best... Located on a busy road ( I would maybe change locations... We had to turn around a couple times to find parking) but I tell you... Authentic as can be! Italian at it finest with fresh bread with olives and salami as a complimentary appetizer ... To a perfectly prepared pasta dish for my love, that's allergic to dairy mind you. My pasta was perfectly al dente with sautéed mushroom and onions and a light hand with the creme sauce. Customer service was immaculate.. The GM came and gave us a history lesson as well... Very knowledgable. I can't rant and rave enough... I am from Las Vegas and this place makes me want to love to Florida. A ++++++ Don't change a thing!!!!

Party of 5 for dinner this week. Food is run of the mill. Service was good. their own made sausage had no fennel. Meatballs had so little flavoring that they tasted like a hamburger. Tomato sauce was very bland. Their own made bread looked very good, but was a disappointment. Tasted like it had no salt in it, very bland. The eggplant parmigiana was not very good. Dinner for 5, with 4 glasses and 2 bottles of wine with tip, $271. Two of the brothers came to the table and gave a speech about their wonderful food. I wish they were right.

Comfy atmosphere with a funky entrance thru a consignment shop. Friendly greeting from the owner followed with bread and salami to start. No veal dishes or choice of salad dressing or whole grain pasta. Wife and I split one garden salad order which was plenty for two people. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil the only dressing option so don't order the salad unless you like it. I ordered the sausage and peppers which I found very mediocre because the sausage had no taste whatsoever. My wife loved the chicken cutlet and the cannoli which I found to be the best dish served. Had only cake or pastry type deserts with no sorbet option which I found disapponting. Service was excellent and I will probably try again in an attempt to find a dish I like. Considering my favorite Italian meal is house salad with blue cheese dressing, veal parmasiana, whole grain spaghetti, and lemon sorbet of which they serve none my trips here will be limited. But on the intangibles this place was great.

Went for a birthday and have to say some of the best Italian food I've ever had. They start with fresh bread that had been grilled, dip them into the olive oil and very fine balsamic vinegar that sit on the table. Then come starter plate of thin sliced salami and black olives. And it was all great. We ordered two appetizers, cheeses of Italy and eggplant something. We ended up needing two more baskets of bread. Our table ordered four dishes: meat balls and fettuccine(the pasta was fresh made that day), nochi w four cheese (a special), shrimp & pasta in red sauce and a pasta dish with anchovies. All the dishes were beyond amazing. The fresh pasta was to die for. And the four cheese nochi was the best I've ever tasted. If your in the area and looking for supper Italian food. This is the pkace.

A true hidden gem. My wife and I had dinner here while visiting the area and are hooked. Great food, great staff . The owner and chef are very proud of their food and are more than happy to come to your table and ensure your complete satisfaction. We wished we had 1 more day to go back and be wowed again. If you blink you miss this place when driving by. Took 2 rides around the block before I found it.

When you go back to the same restaurant three months later and the service and the food is even better than the first time that is really a true definition of a top culinary place.

This was one of the best Italian meals we've had bar none! My 4 year old daughter normally only eats butter with her pasta. After begrudgingly try their [red] sauce, she not only eat all her pasta -- and sauce -- but exclaimed that she would never eat anyone else's sauce! The service was phenomenal!!! I've never written a review on Yelp before. It takes a lot for me to provide any type of feedback more so when it's not asked for. This family run business made my family feel like part of theirs. The starter salami plate with olives was excellent! The homemade bread was excellent! (Almost filled up on it.) I had the spaghetti with meatballs. The menu was quite extensive, but I took the reference meal approach ie I've eaten a lot of spaghetti in my life let's see how theirs stacks up. The opening sentence says it all. The wife had fettuccine with sausage and mushrooms. Great! (I'm glad that she's a small girl. I have lunch tomorrow. ) Dad had penne in a bolognese sauce. Really good too. We were too full for dessert but I'm sure it would've been equally satisfying. We'll be back the next time we're down in Pompano Beach... Part adult satisfaction and part child food therapy.

Noting a running string of Yelp five star reviews for Mediterraneo Cafe & Grill, I decided to give it a try and being glad that I did, I'm adding my five stars to the list. But since the food served here is so much the authentic real thing, basically that of Sicily, I should make an explanation. In America and elsewhere we tend to over generalize about foods. For example we may say that we had Italian food or Mediterranean but those terms are so lose they tend be meaningless. Sure, there are foods of Italy or the Mediterranean but the foods within the various regions of Italy and the Mediterranean vary so widely from region to region or from city to city not only in ingredients, taste, and flavors but also in methods of preparation that can be so unlike the other as to be comparatively unrecognizable. Such is particularly the case with Italy which has more regional and local foods than I could possibly count. Indeed the foods you find in Rome (in my opinion exemplifying the worst of Italian) have little if anything in common with those of the nearby City of Naples, much less those found in Palermo. Where the Mediterraneo Café really excels are with the foods of Sicily which I found to be of the freshest ingredients, the best of hand crafted sauces, true to tradition and perfect in Sicilian regional tastes and flavors. I went for the Pasta Con Le Sarde (pasta with sardine), a dish with which I am well acquainted, generally acknowledged to be the National Dish of Sicily, referenced by some as the dish that "makes nature jump." Basically it's a combination of a fresh sardine, not the type you find in cans but more the type we think of as being pilchard or Cornish, fennel, pine nuts, and seedless raisin along with a garnish of toasted bread crumbs. To me, totally authentic to that of the eastern coast of Sicily and absolutely delicious though I must say that such may not be all that popular with those of American taste. Other items on the menu are also generally of Sicilian but with a couple of items more common to Rome but all having distinctive Italian regional notes. Mediterraneo is a small, casual rather informal restaurant wherein you'll receive a most pleasant greeting from the owner or staff, later maybe a table visit from the chef, and generally treated more as a family member than a mere restaurant customer.

I was meeting a friend and this restaurant was halfway between us. I have driven down this road for 6 years and never saw the place. In fact my GPS took me somewhere else. Once I finally found it and discovered the parking in back I entered the place without a lot of hope. It was incredible. 2 brothers own it, both took the time to stop at the table. The chef came out from the kitchen to describe the food and what was fresh that day. The bread was incredible and the pasta I had was superb. My friend had a traditional choice and loved the sauce. Great choice, excellent value and awesome service. It is worth the small amount of difficulty finding the place and parking your card.

Fantastic food. Great service. Family owned and operated business whose owners really care about delivering a memorable dining experience. The Sicilian owners make truly homemade sauces and the sausages are the best.

I have bookmarked Mediterraneo Cafe for a while since it's close to my house, I finally had the opportunity to visit for a late lunch yesterday, or what they probably considered an early dinner since it was 5pm, which is the the time they open on Sundays. Maybe my expectations were to high after seeing all the rave reviews, however I respectfully disagree. The gentleman that first greeted us was attentive but he was very stiff, he informed us that this was a family business, we were then greeted by our server, a young lady who was delightful. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio and were disappointed they don't offer Carpaccio for the appetizers, the owner explained to us that Carpaccio is not a specialty of Sicily. For lunch my husband was craving the seafood pasta after seeing the photo of the dish on Yelp which is why we came in on the first place, but they informed him that the pasta was served on the side, I then showed them the picture of the seafood pasta that someone had posted here on Yelp, and they said they could prepare it but would need to be asked to do so in advance so they said they could do it next time as long as we called them ahead, this left us confused, don't they just have to mix the pasta with the seafood instead of serving it separately? They said the seafood was too wet and it would drown the pasta, I get that, but how were they able to prepare it before? I never got a full answer to this question and it's still left me wondering. Also, I asked if they had soup, they do not have soup but said I can call ahead and request it, but didn't give me any specifics as to what they can prepare. The bread came out, it was thick, hearty and warm, absolutely delicious, and it was served with a side of Salami and Olives. As for the starter we opted for the cheese and parma on the suggestion of our server, it was very good with a very generous serving of cheese. For lunch I ordered the Homemade Cheese Ravioli Pomodoro which is $17 and not served with salad and consisted of 5 Raviolis, the raviolis were good but the sauce was terribly bland, it tasted like canned sauce, even my husband said that when I asked him to try it. He ordered the Zuppa Marinara $26 which consisted of Fresh mussels, clams, and shrimp pan sautéed with tomatoes, wine, garlic, olive oil and parsley, pasta is not included although he could have opted to order pasta on the side. He enjoyed his seafood and said it was very fresh, but was very disappointed they couldn't prepare a mixed pasta and seafood dish. The restaurant is cute and larger than what it appears from the outside, the lady owner running around looked like she had just been to the beach, she was wearing flip flops and shorts, I know it's a casual restaurant but appearance do matter and they may want to polish their appearance a bit more as the management of the restaurant. However, the chef came out looking very sharp in an all black chef outfit, he came to our table, he was very friendly and made conversation and wanted to make sure we were happy with the meal, I didn't say anything about my bland sauce but my husband did complement him on the fresh seafood. Overall, I was disappointed with Mediterraneo. I found it to be overpriced for what we received, I was extremely dissapointed that the Pomodoro sauce was so bland, runny and lacking character. I much rather drive a little farther down to Isabella's Italian Restaurant - also in Pompano, they also offer homemade pasta and high quality food at a more reasonable price. Food 2.5 Service 4 Ambiance 3.5

4 of us visited this restaurant lst night and was absolutely satisfied with one exception. I had swordfish and although very tasty it was a little over cooked and dry, however the other three meals came out perfectly done right. The pasta and sausage, the spaghetti and meatballs and the branzino were delicious. The service was very good and we were greeted by the owner/chef and his wife and his brother in law , all very family oriented and they all made you feel very comfortable. the desserts were home made and devoured very quickly. absolutely delicious. We will go back.

Unfortunately, I selected this restaurant for a party of four last Saturday evening, basing my decision on the rave reviews on Yelp. The dishes were overpriced, prepared with too much oil, little flavor. I ordered the signature Sicilian pasta with sardines. I have eaten this elsewhere, but found their version lacking in flavor, too oily. Image a $ 28 dish unaccompanied by a simple salad. Just pasta and sardines, most of which I did not eat. I am very familiar with Southern Italian dishes, having grown up in an Italian-American home and having traveled extensively in Italy. This was a waste of good money! Additionally, the constant chatter of the waiter is annoying. He boasts about their fresh ingredients, that they're not in the business to make money, only to serve good food. It cost me plenty.....but I will never go there again. To top it off, they don't take AmEx and the waiter even suggested paying cash.....$ 200 for what?

Wow! I'm Sicilian and from Palermo just like these people- and LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING! These people know what's up! The sausage and peppers MAGNIFICENT! Broccoli rabe- PHENOMENAL !! Fettuccine Alfredo UNREAL! The eggplant caponata UNBELIEVABLE! The pasta bucatini WOW!! This place IS THE REAL deal! Not fancy just throw on your Stretchy Pants and go! You'll wanna kiss me later!!

We were greatly impressed!! We started off very skeptical with only two tables full in the entire place. However, we opened the door and other patrons assured us that we were in for a true, authentic treat. Sure enough we were satisfied! The food was not only delicious, but homemade and absolutely wonderful. The chef accommodated our every need and he came out to personally introduce himself and wish us the best. Amazing is really all I can say. The service, food, atmosphere, everything. You will not be disappointed!

We ordered the pasta: con sardi...and seafood cozzi. along with the appetizer of palermo. First off the prochutto was sliced very thick not how its should be. The pasta was very very dry and not worth $26.00!. The seafood dish they we're out of muscles so they gave me extra clams and shrimp however the stripper a little tiny shrimp and the gentleman kept saying they buy what it's what fresh... its what's fresh... Sounded like a broken record. but those little shrimp were not fresh we all know that they come frozen. They could have splurged and got the bigger shrimp even frozen would have been much better than those tiny little strimp I wish I took a picture. Anyway for the other reviews i think they were paid to write them.

One of the best restaurant meals we've ever eaten. The food was divine and the service unparalleled. Everyone who walked in the door was treated as an honored guest. I only wish we lived close enough to make this place a regular habit!

I took my Valentine out tonight for dinner . I chose this place because of all the great reviews. I promise you it was outstanding. It starts with the greeting, the service and most of all the food. I had the sicillian signature dish penne pasta w/eggplant , red sauce & ricotta cheese, great. Barbara had the mussels, great too. I didn't mention the bottle of wine in the 20's , ricotta cheesecake & capuchino. Our first time there and certainly not the last . Make reservations, only 12 tables. Try it ,you will love it! You will not only enjoy the food and drink but all the attention you get from the whole staff including the chef!

Amazing!!! from start to finish!! Not only do they bring you freshly baked bread they include salami and olives with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Everything was so good and fresh! We started out with the fried artichoke hearts which were light and Amazing with a delightful fresh marinara sauce we also had the bruschetta pomodoro which was one of the best we have had. For the entrees we had the linguine with four cheese and sausage, Bucatini Alla Amatriciana and a special with the housemade sausage, meatballs and pasta. Everything was so fresh and delicious including the desserts. Everyone enjoyed the housemade cassata cake and cannoli. The owner, chef, pastry chef and waitress were all so welcoming and kind you really felt as if you were part of the family. Please go and enjoy the food you will regret not going sooner. I can't wait to eat my leftovers and go back for more.

We knew we hit the right place when some diners were speaking Italian. Had items such as freshly made pesto (not even on the menu), pasta, bread (manna from heaven), sausage (you cannot buy this in a store). The welcome platter of olives, bread and salami was delicious. The family and staff go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Excellent Italian dining. Highly recommended.

We went here Tuesday February 25th. Are Server was Mark. He was very knowledge able about the menu. Smiled almost all the time. Changed flatware for us after each course. He brought bread for us warm. And we had a pasta dish that had broccoli Rabe and grilled sausage with olive oil and Garlic. Which was outstanding. We highly recommend this dish. Also we had the mussels in a Red sauce excellent as well. They gave us a tasting of there Eggplant Spread. Very good also. We look forward To coming back here very soon with are family. The owners also take a interest In coming to your table and asking How we liked each dish. Very friendly It's like having your own family there. This is one of the most friendliest restaurant We have been to in years and being a Family Owned restaurant I can see why the food is so good also. I highly recommend you give this place a try. Parking can be a challenge Because there is parking behind the restaurant you have to go slow in front of the restaurant to make a sharp right turn before it. Into a set of gates. Because it's right on federal hwy. This place is a must to try! Everything is home Made..

This place is fantastic. We had the sausages special and it was superb. All home made as are nearly all of the items on the menu. For desert we had the lemon cake and it was worth the calories. The service is very high quality. The owner came over to our table and sat with us and explained why they do what they do. Then the chef came over and wanted to know how we enjoyed our meal and that he cooks every day and dreams up new items for the menu. We shall go again

When was the last time you went out to eat and felt truly happy that you did it? When was the last time you left a restaurant completely fulfilled? This is a restaurant that reminds you exactly why you go out to eat. You are pampered. The food is perfectly fresh. They have no problem making something custom for you. The prices are reasonable. Actually they are almost a steal... This is the Italian you want when you think about going out for Italian. I'm so happy that I drove by and found it as a tourist in the neighborhood. I highly recommended it to the locals!

Amazing Italian food! Waiters were so friendly and knowledgable about all the dishes and how they are authentically made fresh. Restaurant doesn't have a freezer because all their dishes are made on suite and as fresh as can be. Their homemade Italian bread was warm and delicious. The entrees were amazing! Great Italian food if you are in the area!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
